#BalanceforBetter in Canadian Cannabis
High Values is a HR education and support organization dedicated to breaking down workplace barriers in the cannabis industry. For High Values Founder and Chief Learning Officer, Erin Gratton, human rights education is an expression of her feminist and LGBTQ+ values in the field of Human Resources. Influenced by her own life experiences, Erin also advocates for employees, leaders, and entrepreneurs living with visible and invisible disabilities. Her interest in employment law influences the moves she’s making to rid workplaces of tolerated toxic culture and discriminatory practices.
The High Values #BalanceforBetter campaign sought out to explore intersectional gender balance in cannabis. The goal was to shift traditional hetero-normative thinking around gender balance and bias through education, discussion and personal reflection. The campaign prioritized voices of women drawing from different lived experiences, women of colour, people living with disabilities, sex and gender minorities from different segments of cannabis.
The campaign included several articles, videos, and social media activities, providing several opportunities for the workforce to collectively celebrate women’s achievements in cannabis.
The #BalanceforBetter campaign efforts were reflective of High Values’ core beliefs:
Inclusion must welcome all genders
Inclusion must be intersectional
The following International Women’s Day excerpts were taken from a series of inclusion oriented interviews, held for the creation of this campaign article. The article featured eight women, one of which is transgender, and one man who identifies as transmasculine and genderqueer. Each contributor focuses on an aspect of social justice in their work, and was able to speak to barriers reflected in the communities they represent.
